Get this girl a drink

I watered the hanging plants on the front porch today, and the excess water dripped down along the brick. Here's what Nora made of it.

1 year old

Can someone please explain to me how, in a matter of 365 short days, this:

becomes this?

Norasaur turned 1 yesterday, and I still just can't wrap my head around it. I'm loving her at this age—her clapping, blowing kisses, standing on her own (!), playing peekaboo, giggling, throwing tantrums (wait, do I love that part?)—but I am just bewildered by how quickly time is passing. I do miss the squishy little newborn stage, but I think what really freaks me out is the idea that if one year could pass in the blink of the eye, 18 years will pass in, what, 18 blinks of the eye?

Lest you think I spent her whole special day curled in a ball in my bed weeping for days gone by, here are some pictures of actual, happy interaction from the day. The weeping went undocumented.

Opening her gift from her big bro—wooden stacking rings. He picked them out and wrapped them all by himself.

He's very sweet—since yesterday, he's been bringing the toy over to her so she can play with it whenever she looks bored.

Melissa and Sena at Nora's birthday barbecue.

Miss Teegan, with mamas Tiffany and Alex, checking out the playroom.

Nora trying to drink her Legos out of my wine glass. Is nothing mine anymore?

Not sure what to make of her birthday cupcake. Luckily big brother was there to help.

Modeling proper cupcake eating technique.

Annnnnnnd, some more boozing. Before you call DFS, I assure you that no alcohol actually passed those lips. She just faceplants onto every beverage vessel she sees for whatever reason.

First Camping Trip

What, you don't come to this blog just for the bird updates? Well then, here are some photos of the family from our first camping trip together. It was lovely—we were feet from the river, where Greg and Sidamo could fish, and we shared the weekend with some friends and their sweet daughter Hazel (or "Sizzle," as Sidamo has taken to calling her). The kids did great and loved being outdoors for 48 hours straight. Nora consumed her weight in mud and pebbles. Sidamo spent almost the entire time with his toy fishing pole in the water.

I think I've mentioned that the kids and I are vegetarian; Sidamo is just starting to figure out the whole meat=animal connection, and we're having some funny conversations about it lately. Including this one, by the river:

Sidamo (with his little toy hook in the water): Why I have my hook in the water?

Me: Because you're trying to catch a fish.

Sidamo: How do I catch a fish?

Me: Well, the fish will come along and see your hook, and he'll think it's food. Then you reel him in.

Sidamo: Hmm. I don't like it, but that's the whole purpose of fishing.

I love that he can shut off his morals that way. It'll come in handy later in life.

We're all quite thrilled that the trip went as well as it did, because we were vividly aware of the potential for disaster. Actually, I guess we did have a little taste of disaster on the way home, when Sidamo vomited gallons upon gallons of campfire cooking all over himself, his carseat, the car, all our belongings … it was truly remarkable. But I guess if that's the worst that happened, we can count this trip as a success.

Birdland Diaries, Part 3

Do you know what happens when you leave your family planning decisions to robins? They side with your husband.

I checked the nest each day since my last post, and each day I saw this:

Until Friday, when I saw this:

Apparently Ms. Robin is a modern woman. She doesn't subscribe to any of society's—or Google's—conventions when it comes to family size. I bet she doesn't wear pantyhose either.

Look at the kids growing, thriving, keeping each other warm and toasty in the crazy tornado-and-hail weather:

The little Hanging-Basket Bird, on the other hand, is counting on the warmth of a bigger brood.

That's how it remains today, so I'm guessing she's settled on her number. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for the conversations between her and her honey while they came to that agreement.
